Yep, you read that right. Qualcomm unveiled a non-functional prototype for their new mirasol e-reader, to be released in late 2010. Supposedly the device will sport color e-ink, video capability, qwerty keyboard, a 5.7 inch display, and, a joystick attachment for gaming. They are reportedly also contemplating a reader without a keyboard but with a touchscreen.
Okay, now it definitely sounds cool. But is it too much? Right now the prototype is only a mockup. Realistically, will this even be possible? And if it was, would you even want it? In today’s technology market, everyone is pushing for every device to do everything. But is it really necessary? Why can’t an e-reader be just an e-reader?
Of course the entire project could fail in development, but until then, it’s a cool look at the possible future of e-readers.
